This is what we did with our squares: a 3D piece with strips of translucent paper coloured with oil pastels, pending from an hexagon made of copper. They actually look better than in the pictures (it's very hard to do honor to a piece with this format). Thank you all, we really enjoyed the experience!

What I did with my inchies

Today I finished my inchies piece. I want to thank all of you for participating and doing such a fantastic work!

I changed my mind about the house because as the inchies laid on the table I began to do arcs with them and then this idea came to my mind!

I used the embellisher and some stitching. Also scrim and paper and my new faces.

Please show me what you all do with them. Put them on the blog so that many other people get inspired!

Dear ladies of group 2
I know you are all waiting for my squares to arrive. I am trying my best to finish them, I'm about 1/2 way done. I should have been been finished with all these way before this but life gets in the way sometimes. What I would propose is for me to not hold up the swap any longer. I propose that I send you each a fat quarter of my own hand dyed fabric which is of very nice quality. I apologise for being such trouble to this group. I had very good intentions when I started and have never let a group down that I've taken part in .
I can mail out the fabric today so that you will have it soon. If you prefer the squares, it will be another week or two before I finish.

Thanks ladies for your responses. I am working as quickly as I can to finish these and get them sent out for you.

My fingers are still esp stiff in the morning but if I do my exercises, they will eventually loosen up and become somewhat more flexible. I never thought a broken pinky finger could cause so much trouble! I have threatened my dog if he does anything like that again! (:>)

But he's got himself in his own trouble. He caught his paw in our chain link fence, we think, and he has a deep cut on one of the pads of his paws. He looks so sad. He sits holding that paw up in the air and walks on 3 legs at times. So, I think maybe he's been paid back for what he did to me?

Dear Ladies of Group 2, I am so sorry that I don't have my blocks finished. It seems life got in the way of me remembering the due date. I have been working hard at my rehab of my fingers that were casted. I totally forgot the due date for this swap. I can't believe that I did but I am sorry. I will be happy to do my blocks and send them to you, if you will allow me a little more time. Sara proposed that I finish and send by the middle of April. Angel from Africa - Our mystery soap opera...

Dear all,

Now I must review what I wrote about our "angel". This is getting more mysterious because I don't quite like how it evolves...

Today I got the package mentioned in the letter, but directly from the States with our customs stamp on it and brought by our postman without any marks that it had been in Africa. Just the normal post way...

Now, how can this package come directly from the States, per Air Mail (it was sent on the 10th of February) and somebody has in the meantime time to send the address to Kenya - per computer? - so that this person sends a letter telling me he has the package and is forwarding it to me???

Everything is very suspicious. Now I would look very closely at the people working in the post office that forwarded the mail...

The world is getting kind of crazy with this globalization...!!

This is a picture of all our squares. The yellow ones were made by Anita for another project. The format has been delicious! And seen like this, they do look like candy...
When we get the rest of our orange squares, we plan to mount them in a 3D structure. Today or tomorrow they leave Argentina to reach their destination. And we can't wait to see what we'll get. Green - group3 and that's me finished

Here is my last offering for this time! I have absolutely loved doing these and have learned a lot along the way. I have used a lot of techniques and have really enjoyed. On these I melted felt, used painted angelina, sequin waste, beads and buttons. I will be sorry not to be stopping in here so regularly. Hope all the recipients like my bits! Love carol T

Last but one art squares - Purple group 3

These are my art squares for the purple. I have loved working these as purple is one of my favourite colours. It is suprising what you can fit on to a one inch square. On these I have melted felt to make laddery type things, Used sequin waste (2types) to make pattern, layers of organza, buttons, beads, sequins, closed feather stitch, Kantha type stitching, Button hole, fly stitch, rolled a kind if organza bead, french knots and used the glue gun to make a heart encrusted with microbeads! Phew! I really love these, will be sorry to send them off, and am gutted that the next ones are my last. Only green to go. I want to do some more illustrative stuff on my last ones as I always seem to do textural instead!

ADATA at long last - Group 2

Though we've been sooo late to come to the blog, we haven´t been idle. Our sets are all nearly ready. The camera was one of the delays, but here are the first results. Our colors were IVORY/Butter - Aquablue - White - Lemon green - Green - Purple and our own Orange.

After Sunday (when we meet again) I'll have the rest of the photos and then they'll be on their way to Sara.

I must say we've enjoyed enormously this initiative and this format. LAURA-ADATA

Soldering iron

Susan asked in the comments about using the soldering irons. There are lots of techniques using the soldering irons and you can get really fine tipped ones. The diffinative book I have seen is "Burning issues" by Margaret Beal, and you can get soldering irons from her too, if you email her. Google her and you will find it, or check out workshop on the web's traders mall.
What I did was to use the tip to burn holes through felt(acrylic) and also to score lines in the surface. Hope this helps.

Turquoise and aqua

Here are my turquoise and aqua squares for group 3. I have also enjoyed doing these. I have used the soldering iron to make holes and score lines into the felt. I couched down the cable as last post, but I used some of my daughters stretchy jewellery cord, it is a plastic tubing thing. It makes a nice contrast to the matt of the cable as it is quite shiny. I really like these.

I made this fabric quiltie using 9 of my little squares. It is for a friend in Virginia in the US. Quite happy with the way it turned out.

Here are my turquoise squares for group 3. I love this colour myself, and don't know why I didn't choose it myself! I striped some electrical cable this week for my hanging and the cable covering was a lovely blue, so i have couched it down. Sorry the scan is a bit rubbish, some have a lot of beading and so the scanner doesn't like them, hope their new owner does! Love carol

The other artist (dh) I live with got busy with a project while I was away for a few days. At the fabric store he found this book "Sudoku Quilts" (ISBN: 978-1-56477-731-7) and it inspired this nice piece. (thankfully the book includes the solution to the puzzle). 81 1"x1"squares. He used paper instead of fabric because he'd heard that paper behaves better in public than fabric!

I loved making these. I made some handpainted, embossed and free motion embroidered fabric and am happy with the results. These still need work, as I need to finish off the edges. I would appreciate any advice from my fellow traders as to a few methods of nicely and neatly finishing off edges on these little critters.

Red and gold squares - group 3 - Carol's

This is my work for the red and gold colour for group3. The scan is a bit poor sorry, as I did quite a lot on the surface. Hence the red is not strong on the picture, but it is in the flesh. I did the background by doing stamping in expanding medium onto acrylic felt. I then sprinkled it with gold embossing powder and blasted it with the heat gun. This expanded the medium, made the embossing powder gold and melted back the felt. I free mcained this onto a gold taffeta background and then embellished with stitch, charms, beads, brads and wire. Hello all these are my efforts for group 3 pink, which was Susan's colour. I really enjoyed doing these as pink is not usually my colour, but my 3 year old DD loved picking out the buttons and bits for them. I used Dianne's cling film fabric as the base. I also tried to implement some of the stuff I had learned about detathed chain for TAST while I was at it. Love Carol

Here are my first batch of squares, Gold, the colour I chose for group 3. I decided to do my own batch first as I had made up a background in gold for a postcard swap. I free machined and cabled over taffeta and felt as a backing. Then I blasted the felt with the heat tool, which made it shink, pulling lovely ripply textures. I loved doing the embellishments. Thanks for allowing me to join such a fab swap. Love Carol

Here are my latest offerings ~ GOLD ~ wow it was so fabulous to work with this colour ~ I did free machine embroidery on water soluable fabric, I painted melted and free machined tyvek (brilliant fun), I trapped fibres and sewed on beads.

This one is a little "story"----froggie has laid her eggs and watches the bubbles and leaves to make sure they're all safe. She loves to see the turquoise sky above where as the moon rises, a bird sings lullabies to her and her new life.
This one is beaded, ribbons woven through soldering iron "cuts", and free motion squiggled.

I have only one set left to do now!!! I've learned a lot about trying new things, and experimenting with joy!

These were difficult colours for me to work with also as i usually do deep and dramatic or in-your-face :} They were quite a learning curve for me because of this.
Sara's is made from some of my leftover "fabric paper"--i handpainted with Lumiere the leaves and vines, then added sequins held by beads to each square, increasing the number per square and co-ordinating the colourways chosen by the group i'm. The eighth square has "wild card" colours: tiny stripey beads, and the ninth has gold for her to thank her for inspiring us all!

On Beate's, i did a hand sewn void(hole) on one and pin tucked the entire base fabric before i started embellishing. There's handstitching, silk leaves, buttons, bundled threads and scrunched lace. I left one square plain to show off the simplicity of the colour and tucks.

I found these colors the most challenging so far as they are different from my usual hues. But enjoyed working in these softer tones.

Now onto lime green, green and aqua!

First of all, i'm a little confused---am i supposed to be making squares for all three groups?

Second, i've finished my white/cream and white/beige squares but have to wait until the camera batteries are recharged to show you. I've been working with some dimension , voids and different media/techniques as these are perfect little trial runs--some are going in my visual journal as "samples". Can't just bead as that seems too easy for all of them :} !

I have been so inspired after seeing everyone's art that I started on my square's this weekend.

Here are my orange squares for the 2nd group swap.

When I hosted my 1" swap last year the participants use paper and card so it was a lovely challenge for me to use fabric. Textiles are a recent obsession but they are here to stay!

I had so much fun making these and am looking forward to making the other colors too.

They were so addictive that I abandoned other work to do the squares... oops bad me, but I know I'll be very busy over the next few weeks so I'm quite glad really.
